Are Nutritional supplements good or bad?

To have landed on this site, you must be having an interest in Healthy Living.

Today I am going to walk you through an easy 4-do-it-yourself steps, I found and have used with great success, in my search for healthy living.

But before we get to 4 steps, I would like to say something first about the "big debate" on whether nutritional supplements are good for you and your family or not!

There has been a big debate all over the world on the usefulness and safety of nutritional supplements.

The truth is, nutritional supplements are not magic bullets and cannot be expected to shield one from a
life of continued unhealthy habits. Nevertheless when nutritional supplements are used in combination with a healthy diet, exercise, and rest, they will be a great boost to overall health. This will both prevent illness and help the body deal with and even eliminate illness that is already present.

We know that expectant and nursing mothers are almost always put on supplements. We are made to understand that their nutritional needs are increased at that particular time. We cannot agree more! Sadly though, the supplemention is stopped almost immediately after birth..... don't ask me why. Imagine I did not ask my doctor even though when I was on supplementation I felt so good and would not even catch a cold, which otherwise I was so prone to!

There is a quote that says:
The… patient should be made to understand that he or she must take charge of his own life. Don’t take your body to the doctor as if he were a repair shop. ~Quentin Regestein.
I had not heard that then, otherwise I would have asked my doctor a question!

As I am writing this article, I have lost count of the baby cries round the corner from the doctor's clinic.... REASON - the babies are getting their Vitamin-A drops and measles jab. Did you see the huge ad in the newspapers about the Vitamin-A supplement? Does that say something to you?

When we are young and strong, all may appear well, even without a lot of emphasis on what we put into our mouths. This is not to suggest that the young should be careless with their diet or supplementation. Far from it! Has anyone noticed the number of obese children and young adults we are having today.......... And you know what, they don't like it. So many (especially young ladies) have come to me asking for help to lose weight! My heart goes out to them....because it is not easy to undo the wrongs of "bad"diet but I do try to help them.

As we grow older no-one tells us that our nutritional needs could be changing........ you want to know how?
  • The aging process affects the body's absorption of many nutrients e.g the body is less able to absorb nutrients such as calcium. This may be due to the fact that the stomach secretes less hydrochloric acid, which may reduce the amount of calcium absorbed. This may lead a deficiency in the long run.
  • The body starts to excrete, or eliminate more nutrients e.g. hormonal changes especially in women, may result in more calcium being excreted through the kidneys (urine).
  • The body recovers at a slower pace.
These are but just a few of the myriad of changes that all of us have to go through as we age. Such changes may result in deficiencies of minerals and other vital nutrients which may lead to sicknesses, weakness and lowered organ functioning in various parts of the body!

Another BIG reason why we need to supplement is because our bodies go through renewal all the time. Did you know that
you acquire a brand new body every one year or so!

Our body cells are self-regenerating and self-healing:
Approximately every 4 weeks - New skin is rebuilt
Approximately every 2 months - New heart muscles are rebuilt
Approximately every 1 year - almost every cell in our body will have been replaced with a new cell.

What kind of body(new cells) will you have one year from now? Will it be weaker or stronger, healthier or sickly, older looking or even better than the body you have today? You can make a choice today!

Since the best of diets and exercise alone are not enough to to help us fulfill all the nutritional requirements in our bodies, supplements do help us bridge the nutritional gap.

Do we now rush to the marketplace and get any supplement because it is cheap or expensive or because we heard about it? The answer is NO!

Do your research first. Gather information about the products being offered.

A good rule of the thumb is to avoid supplements that are are unlabeled, ingredients not measured accurately, dosages not clear, and products not registered with the relevant and recognized organizations e.g. Kenya Bureau of Standard (KBS), Food & Drug Administration of the USA (FDA) etc.

Sometimes the media and the scientists regrettably brand all supplements as BAD! this a lot of times is in bad faith and is not true. Get the facts first and make an educated decision!

Do not allow yourself to remain ignorant and totally vulnerable as far as your well-being is concerned. Take control! There's a lot you can do!

I would now like to introduce to you Tianshi nutritional and herbal health products.

Tianshi has put together the health equation for you and me. All their products fall under four(4) main categories which you can easily relate to and follow. It is a 4 step easy do-it-yourself formula!
